A Recent study has found a new drug that can cure the acute myeloid leukemia (AML). This discovery can open new avenues for effective treatments against this lethal disease. Researchers of the Welcome Trust Sanger Institute and the Gurdon Institute showed that inhibiting the METTL3 gene can destroy human and mouse “A” cells without causing any danger to non-leukemic blood cells.
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a kind of blood cancer that affects people of all age groups. It often requires intensive chemotherapy and prolonged hospital admissions for months. It is developed in the cells in the bone marrow and crowds the healthy cells in the body, and that leads to life-threatening infections and bleeding inside the body. Mainstream AML treatments have been the same for decades, fewer than one out of three people survive this kind of cancer.
To find the new ways to treat AML, the researchers used CRISPR-Cas9 editing technology so that screen cancer cells for vulnerable points. In the process of detection, they created a mouse of leukemia cells with the help of mutations. In the genes, they found that it might be targeted in human AML cells and tested each gene as well. This finding was essential for AML survival.
At the end of research, the team ended up with 46 likely candidate genes, many of them were capable of producing proteins that could modify RNA. Amongst these, they found that METTL3 was one of the most active elements that could survive. They found that it was essential that AML cells should survive, but it was not required for healthy RBCs, making it an excellent potential drug target.
Dr. George Vassiliou, who is currently the joint project leader from the Sanger Institute and Haematologist at Cambridge University Trust said that AML is a feared disease that has affected hundreds of thousands of people around the world. This discovery could open the new possibilities and make this world a place safe from leukemia. Still, there is no official announcement from the Team but we can only wait and hope that this drug works out and helps the people by ending this life-threatening disease.
